Sushmita Sen Recalls Magazines In The 90s Refusing To Feature Her On The Cover Due To 'Bad Influence'
Sushmita Sen discusses the challenges she faced as a result of the 'bindaas' attitude she displayed in the 1990s.
New Delhi: Sushmita Sen has been receiving nothing but praise from her devoted audience for her outstanding performance in the recently released web series ‘Taali’. She said in a recent interview that she had gone unnoticed by publications in the 1990s. Sushmita discussed her beginnings in the film business in an interview with Film Companion. She reflected on how often she was labelled a negative influence for saying what was on her mind. Sen now recognises the world’s progress towards greater tolerance.
She was questioned by Film Companion whether her "bindass" demeanour caused any problems. She recalled, "There were (repercussions) in the '90s because back then, it was a much more closeted society. So for you to speak your mind and to say anything that you believed in was like, ‘Phew! She is a bad influence, don’t get her in front of our kids and everyone else.’"
The actress added, “I don’t blame them. I was very loud and clear. I thought if you take away my freedom to express myself, what freedom do I really have? So am I going to scare away from speaking my mind or am I just going to learn how to say it better, say it nicer? Which I did learn because I think I didn’t have that tact before.”
Sushmita said that she believes people in general are more tolerant nowadays. "Far more accepting" is how she described today’s world. The actress did note that the "haww" (Oh My God) element is still there, but that it has been toned down somewhat.
Sushmita Sen played transgender activist Shreegauri Sawant in her recent series 'Taai'. On August 15 of this year, ‘Taali’ premiered on Jio Cinema. Besides Sushmita Sen, it also stars Krutika Deo, Ankur Bhatia, Aishwarya Narkar and Suvrat Joshi.
Meanwhile, Sen is working on the third season of ‘Aarya’, which will release on Disney+ Hotstar.
