Swara Bhasker Calls Out X After Account Suspension Over Alleged Copyright Violations

Bollywood actress Swara Bhasker has strongly criticised social media platform X after her account was suspended following allegations of copyright infringement.

Bollywood actress Swara Bhasker has strongly criticised social media platform X after her account was suspended following allegations of copyright infringement. Expressing her frustration on Instagram, Swara revealed that two of her tweets were flagged, which eventually led to her account being locked and permanently disabled.

In a detailed post, the Veere Di Wedding actress explained the situation, stating that one of the flagged images contained the widely recognised slogan, “Gandhi Hum Sharmindaa Hain, Tere Qaatil Zindagi Hain.” She defended her use of the image stating that the slogan has been part of India’s progressive movement for years and does not fall under any copyright restrictions.

Why Swara's account was suspended

Sharing a screenshot of her suspended X account, Swara wrote, “You can’t make this stuff up!!!!) Dear X, Two images from two tweets have been marked as ‘copyright infringements’. Basis which my X account is locked / disabled, I can’t access it and permanent suspension has been approved by your teams. One with an orange background and text in Hindi Devnaagri script reading ‘Gandhi Hum Sharmindaa hain, Tere qaatil zindagi hain’ is a popular slogan of the progressive movement in India. There is no copyright violation. It is akin to urban modern folk idiom.”

She further pointed out that the second flagged image was a picture of her own child, with the child’s face hidden, holding the Indian flag alongside the message ‘HAPPY REPUBLIC DAY India.’ Questioning the legitimacy of the claim, she added, “How can this possibly be a copyright infringement ???? Who has a copyright on my child’s likeness??? Both of these complaints are ridiculous and untenable by any rational, logical and objective understanding of any legal definition of copyright.” Swara also alleged that the reports against her posts were likely a targeted attempt to suppress her voice and harass her. Urging the platform to review its decision, she demanded the reinstatement of her account.

When Kanagana's account was suspended

Swara Bhasker is not the first Bollywood celebrity to face an account suspension on X. In May 2021, actress Kangana Ranaut’s account was permanently banned due to repeated violations of the platform’s policies on hate speech and abusive behavior. However, nearly two years later, her account was reinstated.
