Ranveer Singh Was 'Nervous...', Choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant About 'Dola Re Dola' Sequence in RRKPK

Ranveer Singh and Tota Roy Chowdhury's performance on 'Dola Re Dola' has also been receiving a lot of appreciation from audiences.

New Delhi: 'Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani' has been making headlines for a variety of reasons. From Ranveer Singh's acting, box office, dialogues, kiss between Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi, the buzz around the film seems to be never ending. Ranveer Singh and Tota Roy Chowdhury's performance on 'Dola Re Dola' has also been receiving a lot of appreciation from audiences. Choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant, the 'Dola Re Dola' dance sequence has become the talk of the town.

Recently, in an interaction with India Today, Vaibhavi opened up about the performance and said that the actors rehearsed for a month before filming the sequence. She also shared that Ranveer was a 'wreck' when she sent him the video of the choreography and was ' so nervous' because he had no training in classical dance.

The choreographer added that it took almost 30-40 days of training for the actors to get the steps right. "We went back and forth about adding, subtracting, depending on what was working for the song,” she said.

Vaibhavi Merchant shared in the same interaction that everyone was nervous a week before the shoot but 'there are no other ways to do it, you have to go through the grind.'

The 'Dola Re Dola' sequence happens before the big meltdown between Rocky's father Tijori and Rani. Vaibhavi added, "He understood and realised the gravity of this scene and sequence. He was nervous about whether he could pull it off. I wasn’t because I had choreographed it in a way that would complement his character. The character has almost three months of experience in the dance form in the movie as well, so we kept that in mind."

About the obvious comparison to the original 'Dola Re Dola' from 'Devdas', Vaibhavi shared that Karan had made it quite clear that the sequence would be a tribute to the other filmmakers.

"It was not copying. Karan was very clear that ‘Vaibs, I want to do an ode.’ The entire film is an ode-fest, if you see. Be it a musical ode, or Yash Ji or older films. Initially, when it came out, people were all comparing, but that’s how it is, the myopic vision they have sometimes. We just have to sit back and see. I have been through it so many times that we don’t even react,” she said.

Recently, in an interaction with Film Companion, Karan said that the song was an ode to Sanjay Leela Bhansali.
