Anurag Kashyap Issues Apology for Remarks Against Brahmin Community: 'I Lost My Composure'

Anurag Kashyap has issued a public apology after drawing sharp criticism for a comment perceived as derogatory towards the Brahmin community.

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has issued a public apology after drawing sharp criticism for a comment perceived as derogatory towards the Brahmin community. The comment, made in response to a social media user, triggered a wave of backlash, prompting the director to clarify his intent and express remorse for his choice of words.

Anurag Kashyap apologises for his comment

On Tuesday, Kashyap took to Instagram to post a detailed note acknowledging his mistake. He wrote in Hindi, “In a moment of anger, I lost my composure while responding to someone and ended up making an inappropriate remark against the entire Brahmin community,” he wrote. “This is a community that has been an important part of my life, continues to be, and has contributed significantly. Many among them are my close associates, and my own family is deeply hurt by what I said.”

"People are hurt by my comment"

The ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ director admitted that his response—fueled by emotion—ended up distracting from the point he was initially trying to make. “Many intellectuals whom I respect were also hurt by the way I responded in anger. By saying such things, I ended up diverting attention from the core issue I wanted to highlight. I sincerely apologise to the community — I didn’t intend to say those things, but in my rage, I responded to a lowly comment and ended up using language that was not right,” he added.

Kashyap went on to apologise to his friends, colleagues, family, and the wider community, stating, “I apologise for my tone, the language I used. I promise to work on myself so this doesn’t happen again. I will control my anger and ensure that when I raise issues, I use appropriate words. I hope you can forgive me.”

Netizens react

The director’s apology has drawn mixed reactions on social media. While some users commended him for owning up to his mistake and taking accountability, others criticised him for his initial outburst. Comments ranged from “Apologising publicly takes courage” to “Don’t project personal frustration on social media. Don’t generalise an entire community.”

What is the controversy around Anurag Kashyap?

The controversy started due to a remark he made online while defending the upcoming film 'Phule', based on the lives of pioneering social reformers Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule. The film, originally slated for release this month, sparked debate due to its depiction of caste-related issues.

While weighing in on the criticism the film has received, Kashyap, in response to a social media user, made a comment about the Brahmin community that quickly drew backlash. The remark was widely circulated and criticised online.

Taking to Instagram, Kashyap wrote on Saturday, “This is my apology, not for my post but for that one line taken out of context and the brewing hatred. No action or speech is worth your daughter, family, friends and colleagues getting rape and death threats from the kingpins of sanskar.”

He continued, “I won't take back what I said. Abuse me all you want. My family didn't say anything. If you want an apology, here it is.”

Kashyap further shared a screenshot of the comment that led to the uproar on his Instagram Stories, writing, “Everyone has read the response… and they’re all outraged as well. At least look at the context before you write.”
