Background
Uttar Pradesh MLC Election 2023 Live Updates: The biennial election for five Legislative Council seats, consisting of three graduate constituencies and two teacher constituencies, took place on Monday. 44 candidates ran in the three graduate constituencies, while 19 ran in the two teacher constituencies. Polling occurred in 39 districts, including Prayagraj, Kaushambi, and Ambedkar Nagar.
An Election Commission observer was stationed in each constituency, monitored by 594 sector magistrates and 234 zonal magistrates. Micro-observers were also present at all polling booths and videography was conducted. 4,941 polling personnel were deployed to carry out the election process.
Ballot papers were used for voting and voters marked their preferences in numbers next to the candidate's name.
The districts where polling took place are Prayagraj, Kaushambi, Fatehpur, Banda, Chitrakoot, Hamirpur, Mahoba, Jalaun, Jhansi, Lalitpur, Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat, Unnao, Bareilly, Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Badaun, Rampur, Moradabad, Amroha, Bijnor, Sambhal, Bahraich, Shravasti, Gonda, Balrampur, Basti, Siddharth Nagar, Sant Kabir Nagar, Gorakhpur, Maharajganj, Deoria, Kushinagar, Azamgarh, Mau, Sultanpur, Ayodhya, Amethi and Ambedkar Nagar.
Additional Chief Electoral Officer Ratnesh Singh said that polling is being held as the tenure of elected members of three graduates constituencies- Devendra Pratap Singh from Gorakhpur-Faizabad, Arun Pathak from Kanpur and Dr. Jai Pal Singh from Bareilly-Moradabad and two from teachers’ constituencies Suresh Kumar Tripathi from Jhansi and Rajbahadur Singh Chandel from Kanpur block teacher is coming to an end on February 12, 2023.
The contest on the Bareilly-Moradabad MLC seat will be one to watch out for. There are 10 candidates in the fray for the seat, but the contest is mainly between the BJP and the SP. However, experts feel BJP's victory is almost certain and the party's candidate Jaipal Singh is likely to bag a hat-trick with 50,000 to 65,000 votes.
Counting will be done at Godown No.1 of the UP Warehousing Corporation, Parsakhera Industrial Area on the Bareilly-Rampurt Road.
BJP Wins 4 Seats, 1 Seat Goes To Independent Candidate
Bharatiya Janata Party has won four out of five seats and an independent candidate has won one seat. The Samajwadi Party has faced defeat in all five seats.
BJP has managed to win the Bareilly-Moradabad block graduate seat, Gorakhpur-Faizabad graduate seat, Kanpur-Unnao graduate block, and Jhansi-Allahabad teacher block seat in the MLC elections. While the independent candidate has won the Kanpur teacher's block seat. BJP's Dr. Jai Pal Singh Busy has won the graduate seat in the Bareilly-Moradabad segment. He defeated the SP candidate by a margin of 51,257 votes. Dr. Jai Pal Singh Busy has won the seat for the third time in a row.
