Shillong BJP candidate threatens suicide in front of Modi if Citizenship Bill is implemented

"I had earlier submitted a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP central leaders and NGOs that Meghalaya and northeastern states should be exempted from the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. The Bill needs to be amended," Shullai said.

NEW DELHI: BJP candidate for Shillong Lok Sabha Constituency, Sanbor Shullai, on Thursday threatened to commit suicide in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi if the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill is enacted. "The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill will not be implemented as long as Sanbor Shullai is alive. I will kill myself. I will commit suicide than to allow the Bill to be implemented in Meghalaya and northeast," Shullai said after casting his vote. The former Deputy Speaker of Meghalaya Assembly said did not have any problem if the Bill is implemented in any other part of India. "I had earlier submitted a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP central leaders and NGOs that Meghalaya and northeastern states should be exempted from the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. The Bill needs to be amended," Shullai said. The NRC got mired in a massive controversy after the names of around 40 lakh people, living in Assam for decades, were omitted from the complete draft that was released last year. Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah Thursday raked up the hotly disputed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and the NRC, as they went about stumping in Assam and West Bengal amid the intensifying cut and thrust of a bitter electoral debate. In its poll manifesto, the BJP promised to enact the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill if it returned to power at the Centre.
