After Rahul Gandhi's Amethi debacle, district Congress president Yogendra Mishra quits

Mishra, the president of the Congress in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, has sent his resignation to party President Rahul Gandhi, owning moral responsibility for Gandhi's defeat.

New Delhi: After Congress’ debacle in its traditional bastion Amethi, where party President Rahul Gandhi's prestige was at stake, the district president of the party in Amethi, Yogendra Mishra, resigned from his post. Mishra, the president of the Congress in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, has sent his resignation to Gandhi, owning moral responsibility for Gandhi's defeat. In his resignation letter, he wrote that it was his responsibility to ensure the Congress victory in Amethi Lok Sabha constituency and he had failed to accomplish the task. Hence he felt that he should take moral responsibility for the same. Earlier today, Uttar Pradesh Congress President Raj Babbar also offered to resign, claiming moral responsibility for the poor performance of the Congress in Uttar Pradesh where the party won just one of the 80 seats. Informed sources said that any decision on these resignations would be taken after the Congress Working Committee meets. Earlier in the day, reports of Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s resignation also surfaced as the party Chief accepted his defeat on Thursday. As per reports, Gandhi had offered to resign soon after the results were out, but his mother Sonia Gandhi had suggested him to tender his resignation at CWC meeting on May 26. Congress suffered a loss for the second time in a row at the hands of the Narendra Modi led BJP. The party bagged only 52 seats in this election.
