When Will Modi Take Oath As PM? Amid NDA Meeting & Cabinet Resignation, Here's What We Know

Earlier on Wednesday, Modi resigned as Prime Minister along with his cabinet before President Droupadi Murmu.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to take oath for a third consecutive term on Saturday (June 8), four days after results were announced on 543 Lok Sabha seats on Tuesday.

This is the first time since first Congress leader Jawaharlal Nehru that a prime minister will be returning to power for a third consecutive term.

NDA MPs will again meet on June 7 to formally elect Modi as their leader and the alliance leaders will then go to the President to submit their letters of support, HAM (Secular) leader and former Bihar chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi said after attending the meeting.

The swearing-in ceremony of the Union Cabinet is also likely to take place the same day, multiple reports said on Wednesday.

Earlier on Wednesday, Modi resigned as Prime Minister along with his cabinet before President Droupadi Murmu. Meanwhile, Murmu has requested the BJP leader to continue as interim Prime Minister till the new government is formed.

The term of the current 17th Lok Sabha ends on June 16. PM Modi also chaired a meeting of the Union Cabinet on Wednesday to take stock of the Lok Sabha election results and discussed matters related to the formation of the next government, India Today said in a report.

As per the report, the NDA allies have already started sending their demands to the BJP for the third term of PM Modi's cabinet. While the JD(U) has demanded 3 cabinet seats, Jitan Ram Manjhi and Chirag Paswan want one cabinet berth.

The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won a majority in the Lok Sabha elections on Tuesday, comfortably crossing the majority mark of 272 in the 543-member Lok Sabha.

The BJP, which won 240 seats, has fallen short of the magic number for the first time since 2014 and is dependent on the NDA allies for government formation.

The Congress, part of the opposition INDIA alliance, won 99 seats in the elections as against 52 in 2019, eating into the BJP's share in Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.
