MCD Election Result: Know The Salary, Work And Funds Allocated To Councillors For Their Ward

In order to carry out civic work in their ward, an MCD councillor is allocated a fund of Rs 1 crore annually.

Counting of votes for the Municipal Corporation Of Delhi elections will end in a few hours from now. Trends suggests Aam Admi Party (AAP) will emerge victorious in the election, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will bag the second spot. Though huge number of people had come out to cast their vote for the civic polls held on Sunday, December 4, not many know what is the salary that the councillors get and where do the funds for the civic work comes from.

MCD Councillor Salary

The councillors of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi do not get anything as an annual fixed salary. A councillor elected in the corporation gets Rs 300 for every meeting. On an average a councillor attends 5 to 6 meetings in a month or sometimes even more. However, for the rest of the expenses, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi councillors get money in the form of allowances, reported ABP News.

Fund Allocated To Councillors 

In order to carry out civic work in their ward, an MCD councillor is allocated a fund of Rs 1 crore annually. However, there are very few councillors in Delhi who are able to utilise the entire amount. Money from the fund to the councillors is disbursed only after they put up a proposal and start work on it, according to ABP News. The opposition parties on several occasions have alleged corruption by the MCD councillors. 

Qualification To Become A Councillor

In order to become the municipal councillor of Delhi, the name of the contestant has to feature in the voter list of the ward from where the person is fighting the election. The person should have also achieved the age of 21 and cleared class 10 exams. However, the eligibility criteria may differ from state to state. 

Work Of A Councillor

The main task of a municipal councillor is to promptly get all development works like cleanliness, maintenance of the streets, drains, roads and public places done under his ward. He is also entrusted with the responsibility of carrying out new for which an annual fund of Rs 1 crore is allocated to them.

In the 2017 civic election, the BJP had won 181 of the 270 wards. The AAP had won 48 wards and the Congress 27.

BJP ruled the MCD for 15 years, between 2007 and 2022 and won all three corporations (North, South and East) even after trifurcation in 2012.

Garbage collection and landfills emerged as one of the biggest issues in the fight between AAP and the BJP for the MCD elections.
