Krishnanagar Lok Sabha Election Results 2024: TMC's Mahua Moitra Leads, BJP's Amrita Roy Trails

Krishnanagar Lok Sabha Election Results 2024: Moitra's party is leading in 31 seats, while the BJP is leading in 10. The Congress has won 1 seat, as per the current trends

Krishnanagar Lok Sabha Election Results 2024: Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra is ahead in West Bengal's Krishnanagar constituency, leading her nearest rival from the BJP, Amrita Roy, by over 60,000 votes. According to the Election Commission's trends, as of 1:35 pm,. Moitra has secured 2,98,821 votes compared to Roy's 2,38,294 votes.

Moitra's party is leading in 31 seats, while the BJP is leading in 10. The Congress has won 1 seat, as per the current trends.

CPM candidate SM Sadi, who is also in the fray, is now the distant third.

Krishnanagar has emerged as a critical battleground in the ongoing elections in West Bengal, primarily due to the presence of Mahua Moitra. This general category seat includes seven Assembly constituencies: Tehatta, Palashipara, Kaliganj, Nakashipara, Chapra, Krishnanagar Uttar, and Krishnanagar Dakshin in the Nadia district. Moitra, who previously left the Lok Sabha in disgrace following a cash-for-query scandal, aims to restore her reputation by defeating candidates from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the CPI(M).

The seat has been with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s TMC since 2009. Moitra, a former investment banker, won the seat in 2019 but was expelled towards the end of her term over an alleged “cash-for-query” scandal.

Moitra has been accused of allowing a businessman to use her credentials to access the parliamentary portal and raise questions related to their business concerns and a rival. She has been one of the 17th Lok Sabha’s most vocal MPs, and has repeatedly accused the Modi government of crony capitalism.

There are altogether 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal, and the BJP has been making steady gains in the state even though it has yet to snag a stint governing the former communist bastion. The BJP won all of two seats in 2014 but raised its tally to 18 in 2019.

While the TMC is part of the I.N.D.I.A bloc, it went solo in Bengal, while the Congress, the Left Front and the Indian Secular Front contested as an alliance.
