Surprise surge of BJP in Telangana dented ruling TRS vote share
Congress improved its tally to three, while AIMIM retained one seat
BJP fought in Telangana without any alliances
Telangana Election Results 2019: With the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA all set to prove its majority on its own in the Lok Sabha, there have been several political opponents and parties from across the country who have been shattered down post the announcement of election results 2019. One such political opponent of BJP is the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) supremo K Chandrasekhar Rao – who planned to stitch a non-BJP and non-Congress front of regional parties in the general elections 2019, but things turned out completely opposite.
Vote Share in Telangana Lok Sabha Elections 2019
However, the surprise surge of BJP in Telangana dented ruling TRS vote share by nearly six per cent in the Lok Sabha elections, giving a jolt to the regional party. TRS secured lower than expected nine seats, while the BJP four seats. The vote share of the BJP was just over seven per cent in the Assembly elections in 2014 and 2018 but went up to 19.45 per cent in the Lok Sabha polls.
The Congress improved its tally to three, while AIMIM retained one seat with its President Asaduddin Owaisi winning from Hyderabad for the fourth successive time. What came as a shocker to TRS was the fact that the Chief Minister's s daughter and sitting MP K Kavitha lost in Nizamabad by 71,057 votes to BJPs D Arvind, a new entrant in politics.
Expert standpoint
Speaking about the same, an independent analyst Professor Nageshwar said six per cent vote share difference is a big dent to the TRS within six months of coming to power. "Reduction of Congress (vote-share) may not have contributed to BJP. But it is TRS which lost its share to BJP. Losing six per cent is huge for any political party," Nageshwar told PTI.
Beginning of BJP era in Telangana
What makes BJP's win in Telangana more surprising is the fact that the saffron party had even lost security deposits in more than 100 out of the total 119 segments in the Assembly polls in December 2018. In this Lok Sabha Elections, BJP fought in Telangana without any alliances. All credit goes to state BJP president K Laxman who hailed the party's wins in seats of Adilabad, Karimnagar, Secunderabad and Nizamabad.
Buoyed by his party's surprise wins in four Lok Sabha constituencies in the state, Laxman said that the party would emerge as the viable alternative to the ruling TRS and form the government after the next Assembly elections. He also said that the results did not come as a surprise to the party as it expected ‘Modi wave’ to prevail in Telangana in the Lok Sabha polls.
KCR’s shattered dreams
Anticipating a hung parliament, the TRS chief was gearing itself to play a ‘king-maker’ role along with parties not aligned with the Congress and the BJP. Reportedly, Rao was looking at himself as a deputy Prime Minister had an opposition government gained a majority in this elections. Rao had even met several regional leaders, including his West Bengal and Odisha counterparts Mamata Banerjee and Naveen Patnaik respectively, DMK president M K Stalin and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav, as part of his outreach to opposition parties.
