BJP announces candidates for Arunachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections

The BJP has released a list of 123 candidates for Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections. The party also announced candidates for 54 Assembly constituencies in Arunachal Pradesh.

NEW DELHI: The BJP on Sunday released a list of its candidates for most of the seats in Andhra Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh Assemblies. The two states will go for Assembly polls along with the Lok Sabha election on April 11. The party has named its candidates for 123 seats in the 175-member Andhra Pradesh Assembly and for 54 seats in the 60-member Arunachal Pradesh Assembly. Andhra Pradesh In Andhra Pradesh, the two main challengers for power are Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP and Jaganmohan Reddy-led YSR Congress with the BJP hoping to improve its tally. This is the second time since its bifurcation (to carve out Telangana) in 2014 that Andhra Pradesh will see Assembly polls. The last time too, the Assembly elections were held with the Lok Sabha polls.

The state will vote to elect 175 legislators to the 176-member Assembly. One member is nominated. Telugu Desam Party (TDP) President N. Chandrababu Naidu is the first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, since its bifurcation. Naidu has also served as the Chief Minister of the undivided state between 1994 and 2004, becoming the longest-serving CM in the state. Arunachal Pradesh Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has been fielded from Mukto constituency. The BJP came to power in Arunachal Pradesh after a majority of Congress MLAs deserted the party to ally with it and later joined it.

Arunachal Pradesh will go to polls for 60 seats. It is ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s Pema Khandu. He became the Chief Minister in 2016 after the resignation of Nabam Tuki of the Congress and imposition of the President's rule. Other than Andhra and Arunachal, elections for Sikkim and Odisha Assemblies will also be held along with the Lok Sabha polls.
