Andhra Pradesh witnessed a crucial political showdown as voters headed to the polls for both Assembly and Lok Sabha elections on May 13. The counting of votes is set to begin at 8 am, according to the Election Commission. All eyes are on whether CM Jagan Mohan Reddy will retain his throne amid strong challenges from TDP-JSP-BJP alliance and Congress. The election results will also be pivotal in determining the political future of the state.
Three-Cornered Contest In Andhra Pradesh
This election sees the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) contesting alone for all 175 Assembly seats. As part of National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has nominated candidates in 144 seats while Pawan Kalyan-led Jana Sena Party (JSP) is contesting in 21 seats. The BJP is vying for 10 seats.
After much speculation about a potential alliance, JSP chief Pawan Kalyan announced on September 14, 2023, that the JanaSena, BJP and TDP would join forces for the 2024 elections. This decision came amidst the arrest of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, as the parties aimed to challenge the incumbent YSRCP collectively.
In a significant political maneuver, Andhra Pradesh Congress brought Jagan Mohan Reddy's sister, YS Sharmila, into the fold. As the state president of Congress, Sharmila is actively campaigning against her brother, the current Chief Minister, adding a layer of intrigue to the election. Congress is in an alliance with CPI and CPM in the state.
The political landscape leading up to the elections was also tense in Andhra Pradesh marred by incidents of violence. Notably, on April 13, during a campaign event in Vijayawada, a miscreant hurled a stone at CM Jagan Mohan Reddy, injuring him on the left temple.
Key Contenders in Andhra Pradesh
Some of the key contenders in the upcoming election are Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy (Pulivendula), Andhra Pradesh Tourism Minister RK Roja (Nagari), Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu (Kuppam), Telugu Desam Party’s National General Secretary Nara Lokesh (Mangalagiri) and JanaSena Party founder Pawan Kalyan (Pithapuram).
