A Mumbai court granted anticipatory bail to Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi in a case over his remarks praising Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

He reached the Marine Drive police station on Wednesday to appear before the police in connection with the case, where he said: "I have been granted bail, and I am going to the Marine Drive police station. The court has directed me to visit the police station and sign before the police for three days."

A massive controversy was trigerred due to his remark as members of the treasury benches asserted that Aurangzeb's praise amounted to insult of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his warrior-son Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, both revered figures in Maharashtra.

On Tuesday, Azmi paid tributes to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj on his death anniversary, hailing him has a valiant warrior. In a post on X, he said: "On the martyrdom day of the second Chhatrapati of Swarajya, the valiant warrior, Dharmveer Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, I pay my humble tribute."

Azmi Requests Maharashtra Assembly Speaker To Revoke His Suspension

The SP MLA had written to Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar requesting that his suspension be revoked. He argued that his statement was taken out of context and that meant no disrespect to both Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

"My statement was taken out of context. Everything I said was actually based on quotes of many other Historians and writers. I did not make any controversial remarks about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. I respect both Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj...I respectfully request the revocation of my suspension," he wrote.

When asked about the fight between Aurangzeb and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, Azmi called it a "political" battle.
