THE World University Rankings 2024: IISC Bangalore Bags Rank 1 Among 91 Indian Institutions In Top 1000

Premier Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) continue to boycott the Times Higher Education Rankings for the fourth consecutive year citing lack of transparency in the ranking methodology.

The Times Higher Education (THE) has released the Times World University Rankings 2024. The rankings shortlist Top 1000 higher education institutions across the world. In the 2024 edition of THE World University Rankings 2024, a record 91 Indian institutions have made it to the list, up from 75 last year. Among all the Indian universities featured in the list for 2024, the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore (IISC Bangalore) has topped the rankings. 

The IISC Bangalore has been placed in the 201-150 bracket in the ‘THE World Rankings 2024’. Other prominent Indian institutions that have been featured in the Times Rankings 2024 include Anna University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Mahatma Gandhi University, and Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management. All these aforementioned institutions have been placed in the ‘501-600’ bracket. 

Several other universities and other higher education institutions also secured a place in the rankings. Universities like Alagappa University, Banaras Hindu University, Aligarh Muslim University, Bharathiar University, IIT Guwahati, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, IIIT Hyderabad, Jawaharlal Nehru University, KIIT University, VIT University, Jamia Hamdard, Manipal Academy Of Higher Education, NIT Rourkela, NIT Silchar, Panjab University, MNIT Jaipur have been placed in the 601-800 bracket in the Times World University Rankings 2024. 

Notably, premier IITs miss out in the THE World University Rankings 2024 since the elite IITs continue to boycott the rankings for the fourth year in a row. The six premier IITs in the country, IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, and IIT Roorkee boycotted the THE World University Rankings in 2020, demanding more transparency in the ranking methodologies. 

Meanwhile, in the global rankings, the University of Oxford tops the chart as the best university in the world, as per the THE World University Rankings 2024. Oxford is followed by Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, and University of Cambridge, as the Top 5 institutions in the world, in the Times World University Rankings 2024.
