Fasting Traditions Exist In Every Religion:

In Islam, the month of Ramadan is dedicated to worship, during which eating and drinking are prohibited from just before sunrise until sunset. This fasting period is known as "Roza." The fast begins with "Sehri" before dawn and concludes with "Iftar" after sunset. However, fasting is not exclusive to the Muslim community; it is observed in various religions. For instance, in Hinduism, fasting is observed during Navratri; in Jainism, it is practiced during the Paryushan festival; and in Christianity, fasting holds significance during the Holy Fasting festival. Similarly, fasting during Ramadan in Islam is a significant practice that aligns with these religious traditions.

Roza Teaches Patience And Restraint:

For Muslims, fasting is of great importance because it is considered one of the five pillars of Islam, making it obligatory for every Muslim. The Holy Quran (Al-Baqarah: 184) states, "Wa an tasoomu khairullakum in kuntum ta'lamoon", meaning "And fasting is better for you, if only you knew." This verse highlights that fasting brings goodness and benefits to believers. In Arabic, fasting is called "Saum" or "Siyam," which translates to "restraint" or "self-control" in Hindi and Sanskrit. This signifies that fasting teaches discipline, patience, and self-restraint.

Significance Of The First Fast Of Ramadan:

During the month of Ramadan, Muslims observe fasts for 29–30 days, with each day carrying its own importance. Today, on Sunday, March 2, 2025, Muslims observed the first fast of Ramadan.

The first fast is regarded as the "Beginning of Faith." On this day, after eating Sehri before dawn, individuals refrain from food and water throughout the day, breaking their fast only after sunset with Iftar. However, fasting is not just about abstaining from food and water; it is about exercising self-control over all forms of negativity. This is why people from all social and economic backgrounds observe the fast themselves, as no wealth can allow a person to delegate their fast to someone else.
