NIMHANS Signs Pact With University Of Liverpool For Next Phase Of Collaborative Research

The partnership between NIMHANS and University of Liverpool will be further aided by the Pratiksha trust, with a financial assistance of 1.5 million pounds.

The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) Bengaluru has inked a pact with the University of Liverpool, for the next phase of collaboration between the two institutes for research into neurosciences and mental health. Furthering the agreement with optimal support, the NIMHANS has also partnered with Pratiksha Trust. The trust will provide a financial assistance of Rs 1.5 million pounds for the research alliance. On Tuesday, a special event was also organised at the NIMHANS Bengaluru to mark the signing of the agreement. 

Notably, the NIMHANS and the University of Liverpool already share an academic and research partnership which was inked in 20002, and is now over two decades old. The partnership between the two institutions has had a profound impact on global healthcare, saving around 200,000 lives across the globe. The collaborative efforts between the two institutions have also garnered significant external funding, totalling 10 million pounds. The major courses of the external funding include; Wellcome Trust, the UK Medical Research Council, and the Indian Council for Medical Research, and the Gates Foundation, news agency PTI reported, citing an official statement.

Under the collaborative research initiative by the two institutions, various areas that would be explored include three core research strands which are brain infections, child and maternal mental health, neuro-imaging and epilepsy research. The alliance has also put in place a new dual PhD programme, joint workshops to be held annually, to prioritise and explore new avenues of research. 

"The partnership will expand across four key components: Dual PhD programme, Early Career Researcher Exchange programme, Senior Researcher Exchange programme, and annual symposiums,” an official statement was quoted as saying.
