NEET PG 2024: SC Issues Notice To NBE & Union On Result Transparency Case, Next Hearing On Sep 27

The Supreme Court has issued a notice regarding transparency in the NEET-PG exams, expressing dissatisfaction with last-minute changes by the NBE.

The Supreme Court on Friday issued a notice in response to a writ petition seeking greater transparency in the NEET-PG exams. The Court expressed its dissatisfaction with the National Board of Education's last-minute changes to the exam pattern. The matter will now be heard on September 27, as reported by Live Law.

Senior Advocate Vibha Makhija, representing the petitioners, criticised the new marks normalisation policy introduced just three days before the exam, describing it as a "knee-jerk reaction." She highlighted the lack of regulations from the NBE governing exam conduct, emphasising that everything relies on a single information bulletin that can be altered at the authorities' discretion.

Addressing the NBE's counsel, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) questioned why the exam pattern was modified so close to the exam date, stating, "They claim you haven't framed regulations; everything relies on the brochure, and just three days before the exam, the entire pattern is changed—how can you do this?"

The NBE's counsel responded that no unusual changes had been made. The CJI countered, "It is very unusual! Three days before the examinations? Students will have a meltdown!"

The bench, led by CJI DY Chandrachud and comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, issued a notice in the case and directed the NBE and the Union to submit their responses within a week.

The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) announced the NEET PG results on August 23, 2024. However, some candidates have expressed concerns about discrepancies in their results, claiming that improper normalization has resulted in unexpectedly low ranks.

Many students have compared their responses to unofficial answer keys from coaching institutes and are dissatisfied with their scores. In response, these candidates are urging the NBE to release both the raw and normalized marks, along with the official answer key, to enhance transparency.

The NEET PG 2024 exam was conducted by the NBEMS at 416 centers across 170 cities. Students who qualify will have the opportunity to secure admission to 26,168 Doctor of Medicine (MD), 13,649 Master of Surgery (MS), 922 PG Diploma, and 1,338 DNB CET seats.

NEET PG is an annual entrance exam held in a computer-based format for admission to various MD, MS, and PG Diploma courses throughout India.
