Opinion: Why STEM Is Future, And How To Choose The Specialisation For A Career That Lasts

With AI, robotics, and energy tech transforming businesses, STEM specialisations are in high demand.

By Pramod S Nair

By 2030, 86% of employers expect artificial intelligence (AI) to overhaul their operations, according to the World Economic Forum’s 2025 Future of Jobs report, with robotics (58%) and energy tech (41%) close behind. These shifts are reshaping jobs, AI and big data skills are skyrocketing and outdated roles are fading fast. With digital access poised to transform 60% of businesses, students eyeing STEM face a now-or-never moment to pick a specialisation that harnesses this momentum. The demand for tech literacy and cybersecurity skills signals a future where STEM drives progress.

By 2027, reports indicate, India is projected to produce 18 million STEM graduates, reflecting the urgency to equip students with industry-relevant skills alongside proper career guidance to thrive in the ever-evolving job market. From biotechnology to cloud computing, STEM fields offer paths to tackle hunger, climate, or connectivity. Choosing wisely means blending what excites you with what the world needs. This roadmap cuts through the clutter, offering a clear plan to select a specialisation that is both rewarding and ready for tomorrow’s challenges.

First, Discover Your Passion

Always begin with self-reflection. STEM’s scope is vast, from data science crunching numbers for insights to aerospace engineering building the skies’ future. The World Economic Forum Future of Jobs report highlights that demand for technology-related skills, including AI and big data, networks and cybersecurity and technological literacy, are anticipated to be the top three fastest-growing skills.

It is important that you figure out whether you lean toward coding neural networks or designing eco-friendly grids.

What exactly steers your ship? From joining short online courses to get a glimpse into bioinformatics to joining science clubs to tinker with circuits, try everything to understand your inclinations and interests in the field.

Shadowing professionals at tech firms or STEM webinars reveals daily realities, this will ensure your pick — be it AI or sustainable agriculture — fits your strengths and aligns with your goals.

Weigh The Landscape

Once you’ve decided what specialisation you would pick, it is of utmost importance that you test your choice against trends.

With advancements in technologies, especially in robotics and automation (58%), these trends are expected to have a divergent effect on jobs, driving both the fastest-growing and fastest-declining roles.

Roles such as Information Security Analyst, Data Scientist, DevOps Engineer, AI Engineer, and Cloud Architect are some of the fastest-growing STEM jobs with a high demand. Though these tech-jobs offer a promising pathway to a dynamic, well-compensated future, you must ensure that your degrees aren’t subpar or unverified because accreditation matters.

Seek universities with labs and co-ops, and programs with hands-on opportunities, as these will help you build real skills by blending theory with practice.

Networking is another great way of getting insights and boosting perspective. Reach out to faculty with industry ties and alumni at firms to gain knowledge.

While niche paths such as AI ethics and quantum computing demand rare grit, paths such as software engineering and cybersecurity offer steadier starts. It is essential to do research around the growth and demand of your specialisation and align your passion with a path that promises stability.

Choosing a STEM specialisation is not about chasing trends but finding where your skills meet global needs. Mentors, internships, and relentless curiosity are your tools. As India powers a tech-driven era, your STEM path isn’t just a career but rather a chance to solve problems and inspire change.
