GTU Exams 2020: After Refusing To Cancel Exams, Students Face More Problems With Allocation Of Far Flung Centres

The Gujarat Technological University (GTU) is set to begin offline exams from July 2. But students are now facing problems with exam centres that are located far away from their homes

Ahmedabad: Despite demands for cancelation of exams from students due to the rising coronavirus cases in the state, the Gujarat Technological University (GTU) has decided to go ahead with the exams scheduled from Thursday, July 2. The University will conduct three sets of exams starting with offline exams from July 2, online exams from July 21, and special exams in September. But those students who opted for the offline exams are now facing practical difficulties in giving their exams as most exam centres are located far away from their homes. University Grants Commission May Issue Fresh Guidelines for Final Year Students Today The university had earlier announced ‘choice-based selection of exam centres’ but after receiving admit cards, students found that centres were not of their choice and will require long commute daily. According to a report by Ahmedabad Mirror, some students have said that they will have to travel almost 300 kms daily as the centre is located 150 km away from their homes. This is in spite of selecting a centre closer home. The travelling difficulties have been compounded by the monsoon and lack of adequate transport facilities. For example, in the case of students who selected their college as the exam centre the suspension of college buses is a problem as they will have to travel on their own. We have asked all exam centres to keep hostel facilities ready to accommodate students who have to travel long distances or those who may find it difficult to commute daily. We are also making an emergency arrangement to accommodate students in nearby centres. Students facing issues should contact the GTU exam office,” said GTU Registrar K N Kher in the report. The report said that around 54,000 students have opted for online exams.
