DMK Govt Vs Guv: RN Ravi Says Tamil Nadu's Education Quality 'Below Average'

Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi also criticised the state government's approach to combating the drug menace and commented on its ambiguous stance regarding the PM SHRI school scheme.

Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi faced criticism from state ministers after he claimed that the quality of education in Tamil Nadu has declined sharply, with teaching standards in government schools falling below the national average. On Thursday, Governor Ravi, addressing ‘Think to Dare’ interaction series with teachers and educationists at Raj Bhavan on Teachers' Day, stated that around 75% of Class 9 students in Tamil Nadu struggle with basic numeracy, while 40% find it difficult to read Class 2 textbooks, rendering them potentially unemployable, as reported by The New Indian Express.

Governor Ravi also expressed concern over the widening disparity between students in government and private schools, warning that this gap could "mortgage the future" of Tamil Nadu's youth. Additionally, he criticised the state government's approach to combating the drug menace and commented on its ambiguous stance regarding the PM SHRI school scheme.

In response, Tamil Nadu’s Sports and Youth Development Minister, Udhayanidhi Stalin, condemned Governor Ravi’s comments as an insult to the state’s teachers and students. He defended the state’s education system, emphasizing the dedication of educators and the progress made under the state's curriculum.

State School Education Minister, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, also rejected the Governor's remarks, questioning the basis of his claims. "I don’t know as per what survey he is giving these kinds of reports," the minister said, highlighting Tamil Nadu's high gross enrollment ratio of nearly 53%, one of the highest in the country. He added, "We are the forerunners... I deny the Governor’s statement."
