Delhi NCR Schools: SC Directs CAQM To Decide On Schools Reopening By Tomorrow

School Reopening News: The Supreme Court has directed the Air Quality Management Committee to decide by tomorrow whether schools in Delhi-NCR can reopen or continue with online classes due to ongoing pollution concerns.

The Supreme Court has directed the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to make a decision by tomorrow on whether schools in Delhi-NCR can resume physical classes or if online education should continue. The directive comes as GRAP-4 (Graded Response Action Plan) remains in effect across Delhi-NCR due to the alarming air pollution levels.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court noted that the current pollution situation does not allow for any immediate relaxation of restrictions. However, the Court emphasised the need for a balanced approach and suggested that schools explore a hybrid model. This model would allow children who can access online education to continue studying from home, while those without such facilities can attend school physically.

The court-appointed commissioner also submitted a report highlighting that air pollution levels remain critically high. The Court was informed that GRAP-4 measures have led to the suspension of physical attendance in schools across NCR, not just in Delhi.

Concerns were raised about children who are unable to access online classes due to a lack of resources. The Court acknowledged these issues and recommended that students be given the flexibility to choose between online and offline modes of education. It also expressed concern about the health risks for children, such as breathing difficulties, if schools reopen prematurely.

The Supreme Court further directed the court commissioner to continue monitoring the situation and maintain their efforts. The Court reiterated that it would not consider downgrading GRAP measures to Level 3 until there is substantial evidence of improved air quality.
