Bengal's New Education Policy Mandates Classes 5-8 Students To Study Three Languages

As per the official statement, students in grades 5 to 8 will be mandated to study three languages, with the third option being open to either a regional language or a foreign language.

Kolkata: The New Education Policy introduced by the West Bengal government specifies that students in classes 5-8 will be required to study three languages, with Bengali being given precedence, according to an official announcement on Tuesday. Two languages will be taught at the primary level - of which one will be the mother tongue, the official elaborating on the policy cleared on Monday by the state cabinet said.

As per the official statement, students in grades 5 to 8 will be mandated to study three languages, with the third option being open to either a regional language or a foreign language.

"The third language could be a local or regional language as well as a foreign language, but priority must be given to Bengali, Sanskrit or Hindi. The main idea is to teach Bengali to youngsters in West Bengal," an official said.

In response to queries about the timeline for implementing the three-language policy, the official explained that it would be rolled out in a phased manner. Further elaborating on the policy, the official emphasized that it aligns with the current educational structure, which consists of four years of primary education, four years of upper primary education, followed by two years of secondary education and another two years of higher secondary education.

Providing additional details about the policy, the official highlighted that a semester system would be initiated from grades 8 to 12, and this approach would be gradually introduced over a span of three years.
