A total of 21,779 are vacant in central universities across the country, the Education Ministry informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. CPI(M) MP John Brittas asked for details on the total number of sanctioned posts and current vacancies in Central Universities, as well as the number of new employees recruited in the last three years.
In response to John Brittas the Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar said that As of April 1, 2024, the total number of sanctioned teaching posts stands at 18,940, with 5,060 vacancies, while there are 35,640 sanctioned non-teaching posts, of which 16,719 are vacant.
"The Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Teachers Cadre) Act, 2019, notified on July 9, 2019, ensures reservation of teaching posts by considering the university as one unit," the Minister said. He also mentioned that this reservation policy applies to all higher educational institutions, except those listed in the schedule and a few other exceptions as outlined in the Act.
"For the recruitment of non-teaching staff, guidelines have been issued to institutions to follow the Government of India's reservation policy, circulated through the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT)," the Minister added.

Vacancies in these universities arise due to retirements, resignations, and the need for additional staff due to increased student enrollment, the minister informed.
"Occurring of vacancies and filling thereof is a continuous process. Central Universities have been directed to fill up the vacancies in regular mode; the onus of filling up the posts lies on the Central Universities, which are autonomous bodies created under Acts of Parliament," he said.
Highlighting the progress made, he said, "Through special recruitment drives, more than 9,650 positions (teaching and non-teaching) have been filled, out of which 1,281 positions have been filled by Scheduled Castes (SCs), 634 by Scheduled Tribes (STs), and 2,011 by Other Backward Classes (OBCs)."
