Sanjay Singh Arrest Live: Hello and welcome to the live blog, please follow this space for all the latest updates and pertaining to the arrest of AAP MP Sanjay Singh by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the Delhi Excise Policy Scam.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh in connection with the Delhi Excise Policy Scam case, making him the third AAP minister to be taken into custody. The arrest followed ED officials conducting raids at Singh's residence on Wednesday as part of an ongoing investigation into a money laundering case linked to the Delhi excise policy.
Sanjay Singh's arrest further diminishes the strength of the AAP led by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, as the party has already seen Manish Sisodia and Satyander Jain facing incarceration.
Prior to Singh's arrest, ED investigators had questioned members of his staff and individuals associated with the 51-year-old Rajya Sabha MP.
Sanjay Singh's name was mentioned in the ED's charge sheet, which detailed his alleged involvement with Dinesh Arora, a middleman. Arora claimed to have met Singh during an event at his restaurant, Unplugged Courtyard. According to the charge sheet, in 2020, Singh reportedly requested Arora to help restaurant owners raise funds for the Aam Aadmi Party's Delhi assembly election campaign, resulting in a cheque for ₹82 lakh being issued for this purpose.
The charge sheet further disclosed that Dinesh Arora stated that another accused, Amit Arora, sought assistance in relocating his liquor shop from Okhla to Pitampura. Singh allegedly facilitated this request by communicating with Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, ultimately resolving the matter through the Excise Department.
Dinesh Arora's statement also indicated that he had met Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal once at his residence in the presence of Sanjay Singh, while he had spoken to Sisodia on several occasions.
In response to the ED's searches at MP Sanjay Singh's residence, AAP alleged that the investigation agency was targeting Singh due to his parliamentary inquiries regarding the Adani group.
"Sanjay Singh kept on raising questions on the issue of Adani, and this is why the raids are being conducted at his residence. The Central agencies found nothing earlier and won't find anything today either. First, they conducted raids at the residence of some journalists yesterday and today, raids conducted at Sanjay Singh's residence," said AAP spokesperson Reena Gupta.
Sanjay Singh's father, Dinesh Singh, stated that they are fully cooperating with the ED's investigation.
The Delhi government's excise policy for 2021-22, which granted licenses to liquor traders, was alleged to have allowed cartelization and favored certain dealers who purportedly paid bribes for it. This charge was vehemently denied by the AAP. Subsequently, the policy was scrapped, and the Delhi Lieutenant Governor recommended a CBI probe. In response, the ED registered a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
