A boy of class 9 died after he fell from a foot-over bridge in Delhi while returning to his home in Ghaziabad.

A 16-year-old schoolboy in Delhi died after he fell from a foot-over bridge on Wazirabad road, said the police on Thursday, according to a PTI report. The victim, a student of class 9 was returning home in Ghaziabad on Wednesday when the incident took place at around 1:45 pm. He was taken to the GTB Hospital with serious injuries where doctors declared him dead, they said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (northeast) Joy Tirkey said the boy “fell on the road below from a height of about six metres and sustained serious injuries," as per the PTI report.

As per the boy’s classmate, who was with him when the incident took place, told police that he was leaning against a guardrail just before he fell down, as per the officer.

An FIR has been registered against the concerned authorities by the police in connection with the matter under sections 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others), and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.

In October, part of a foot-over bridge collapsed in East Delhi’s Laxmi Nagar area after a loaded crane crashed into the bridge, the police said, adding that no one was injured in the crash, according to a PTI report.

The truck driver, Niraj (28) was arrested by the police in connection with the matter and a case was registered under negligent driving. The incident took place late in the night when the crane was being taken to Burari from Akshardham Temple, as per the PTI report.

A police official said that when the truck reached Pusta Road near Lalita Park, a part of the crane hit the foot over-bridge, causing it to partially collapse. He said, “The truck driver could not estimate the height of the foot over-bridge. Thankfully, there was no one on the bridge nor anyone below it.
