Who Are The Accused With Monojit Mishra In The Kolkata Gang Rape Case?

Who Is Monojit Mishra: TMC student leader Monojit Mishra, along with two others, was arrested for allegedly gang-raping a law student inside Kolkata college.

The outrage over the RG Kar Medical College doctor's murder was barely cooling when Kolkata was hit by another ghastly crime against a woman. A law student was allegedly gang-raped on the college premises, raising fresh concerns over women's safety in the heart of Kolkata.

Who Is Monojit Mishra?

At the centre of the storm is Monojit Mishra (31), a former student of the South Calcutta Law College in Kasba and the alleged mastermind of the assault. According to sources, Monojit was closely associated with the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) and had served as the unit president of the college's student union.

His social media profile features multiple images from Trinamool events, and he was recently seen presenting a uttariya (traditional shawl) to the newly elected South Kolkata Youth Trinamool president, Sarthak Banerjee.

Monojit Mishra is not just a former student of South Calcutta Law College — he's a name that reportedly continued to carry influence on campus even after graduating in 2022. Following his graduation, Mishra began practising law at Alipore Court, but sources say his campus involvement didn't end there.

During his student years, Mishra held the post of President of the TMCP unit at the college in 2017 and was known for his assertive and, at times, allegedly aggressive conduct. His close ties with the ruling party became more prominent over time, reported News 18.

According to the news website, Mishra currently serves as the Organising Secretary of the South Kolkata District unit of TMCP, according to the group's official Facebook page. Photographs on social media show him alongside top Trinamool leaders, including MP Abhishek Banerjee, Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, and local councillor Kajari Banerjee.

Monojit Mishra Arrested

Police have arrested Monojit along with two others — Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee — on charges of gang rape and blackmail. Investigators say a video of the alleged assault was recorded and used to threaten the survivor. Forensic teams have collected evidence from the scene, and the survivor underwent a medical examination at Chittaranjan National Medical College. The three accused have been remanded to four days of police custody.

In an interview with ABP Ananda, the college's vice-principal confirmed that he was informed by the night guard about the police's visit early in the morning. "Two rooms have been sealed. I rushed to the college, but I still haven't been allowed inside. After hours, no one is supposed to be here," he said. According to him, Monojit was a temporary staff member, appointed under the governing body's direction for a six-month term. "He is an alumnus and has a law degree. Based on that, the governing body appointed him," the vice principal added.

Sources said the college's governing body is headed by a senior Trinamool Congress leader, further fuelling questions about Monojit's political protection and influence.

Who Are The Other Accused?

The other accused in the case are Zaib Ahmed 19 and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, both current third-semester students of the college. All three were produced before the Alipore court on Friday and have been remanded to police custody until July 1.

What Happened Inside The Kasba Law College?

According to police sources, the crime was committed on June 25, between 7:30 pm and 8:50 pm, within the premises of the college itself. The 24-year-old survivor had arrived at the campus earlier that day, reportedly to complete pending examination formalities.

In her complaint, she stated that she was initially waiting inside the college union room. At some point, Monojit allegedly instructed that the college gate be locked, restricting any possibility of outside intervention. The woman was then forcibly taken to the security guard's room, where the assault is alleged to have occurred.

A police complaint was filed late Thursday night, prompting officers from Kasba Police Station to act swiftly. All three accused were arrested soon after.
