Bengal: Death Sentence For One, Life Term For Another In Minor’s Murder, Necrophilia Case; CM Mamata Lauds Order
A Murshidabad court sentenced Dinabandhu Halder to death and Subhojit Halder to life imprisonment for the rape, murder, and necrophilia of a 12-year-old girl in Farakka in October.
A Murshidabad court on Friday handed down a death sentence to Dinabandhu Halder and life imprisonment to Subhojit Halder for their involvement in the rape and murder of a minor girl, as well as the subsequent act of necrophilia, in West Bengal's Farakka in October. The ruling was pronounced on the 61st day of the crime, with the police completing their investigation and submitting the chargesheet within 21 days.
The Additional Sessions Judge of Jangipur Court, following a verdict declared the previous day, found Dinabandhu guilty of both rape and murder, while Subhojit was convicted of assisting in the crime, news agency PTI reported.
Speaking to reporters after the sentencing, Supratim Sarkar, Additional Director General (ADG) of West Bengal Police, explained the crime's chilling details. On Vijaya Dashami, October 13, Dinabandhu lured the 12-year-old girl with flowers in Farakka, Murshidabad. He then proceeded to rape and murder her. Dinabandhu then committed necrophilia on the victim's lifeless body, with Subhojit aiding him in the crime, as per PTI's report.
A special investigation team (SIT) was swiftly formed to handle the case, and within a 21-day period, the police managed to arrest the two accused and submit a comprehensive chargesheet.

Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Says 'Every Rapist Deserves Nothing Less Than Capital Punishment'
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee welcomed the death sentence, reiterating her stance on rapists deserving the harshest punishment. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Banerjee wrote: "I have said this before, and I will say it again: Every rapist deserves nothing less than the harshest punishment — capital punishment. As a society, we must unite to eradicate this heinous social malice. I believe that swift, time-bound trials and punishments will serve as a powerful deterrent, sending a clear message that such crimes will not be tolerated."
The Chief Minister also expressed her condolences to the victim's family and praised the police and prosecution for their efforts. "My thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim," she said.
