RG Kar Rape-Murder: Bail Granted To Sandip Ghosh, Abhijit Mondal As Chargesheet ‘Not Filed Within 90 Days’

Abhijit Mondal and Sandip Ghosh were granted bail by a court due to the CBI's failure to file a chargesheet within the required 90-day period. Mondal is accused of delaying the FIR, while Ghosh is accused of tampering with evidence.

A Sealdah court on Friday granted bail to former officer-in-charge of Tala police station, Abhijit Mondal, and Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar hospital, in connection with the rape and murder of an on-duty doctor at the state-run medical facility.

The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) granted bail to Mondal and Ghosh after the chargesheet against them was not filed within the mandatory 90-day period. Ghosh’s lawyer confirmed that both were granted bail as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) failed to meet the deadline. "The chargesheet was not filed within 90 days, and hence they were granted bail," the lawyer said, as per news agency PTI.

The accused were released on bail bonds of Rs 2,000 each and were instructed to cooperate with the ongoing investigation. Mondal faces charges for alleged delay in filing the FIR, while Ghosh is accused of tampering with evidence.

RG Kar Rape And Murder Case

The case revolves around the rape and murder of a post-graduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, whose body was discovered in the seminar room of the hospital on August 9. The CBI is investigating the matter on the orders of the Calcutta High Court, and both Mondal and Ghosh were arrested in relation to the incident.

While Mondal is expected to be released from the correctional home where he is held on judicial remand, Ghosh will remain incarcerated due to another ongoing case involving alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar hospital.

Earlier on Friday, the two accused were produced before the court of ACJM Arijit Mondal under heavy police security. The defence lawyers requested bail, citing the CBI’s failure to file the chargesheet in time. The CBI, however, stated that the investigation was still underway, PTI reported.

The central agency has filed a chargesheet against the prime accused in the case, Sanjay Roy, who is alleged to have committed the crime on August 9. According to the chargesheet, Roy, a civic volunteer with the local police, raped and murdered the doctor while she was resting in the hospital’s seminar room during a break.
