Rain Brings Respite To Scorching Varanasi, Heavy Shower Likely for Next 5 Days

Varanasi experienced relief from a severe heatwave with heavy overnight rain, dropping temperatures from over 43°C to 37°C.

After weeks of sweltering heat, Varanasi finally received a much-needed respite as heavy overnight rain on Monday brought temperatures down and blanketed the skies in clouds for most of the following day.

The hours-long downpour not only cooled the air but also offered significant relief to residents who had been reeling under extreme heat. On Tuesday, intermittent showers continued throughout the day, accompanied by overcast conditions that kept the sun at bay.

Relief After Days of Blistering Heat

The shift in weather has led to a noticeable drop in temperature, with the mercury falling to a high of 37 degrees Celsius and a low of 26 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. This is a significant relief for locals who had been battling temperatures soaring past 43 degrees Celsius during the first two weeks of June.

According to meteorologists, the cool spell is expected to continue. Forecasts suggest the possibility of heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms across Varanasi and surrounding districts from 18 to 21 June. By 21 June, the maximum temperature is projected to drop further to around 31 degrees Celsius.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued predictions of widespread rainfall over the next four to five days, raising hopes for continued relief from the oppressive heat. The rains are expected to not only bring down temperatures but also ease the discomfort caused by intense humidity and dry conditions.

City Struggled Through Early June Heatwave

The first half of June had left Varanasi residents gasping under the unrelenting sun. With temperatures regularly breaching 43°C, the heatwave had begun to disrupt daily life. By 8 a.m., the scorching sun would force people indoors, making outdoor movement nearly impossible.

Now, with the monsoon setting in, the mood in the city has shifted. Streets that were once deserted during the daytime are slowly coming back to life as the weather turns milder.
