TMC Condemns South Calcutta Law College Rape Case, Assures 'Justice Will Be Served'

"We unequivocally condemn the tragic rape incident at South Calcutta Law College. Kolkata Police have swiftly apprehended all three accused, and the full weight of the law will be brought to bear, ensuring the most severe measures are imposed on those found guilty," posted All India Trinamool Congress on X.


"This tragedy once again underscores the urgent need for the implementation of the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill to establish a strong deterrent against sexual offences, emphasising the necessity for speedy investigations, swift trials, and stringent punishments. It is extremely unfortunate that the @BJP4India Govt. at the Centre has not lifted a finger to get it implemented," the party led my CM Mamata Banerjee said.

In a shocking incident, a student was allegedly raped by her two seniors and a former student of the educational institute in Kolkata, police said on Friday. The three accused were arrested on Thursday night in connection with the gang rape, an officer said, as quoted by news agency PTI.

The incident took place on the evening of June 25, when the woman went to the college and was taken by the three accused to a room inside the educational institute and gang-raped, the police said. The student lodged a complaint with the Kasba Police Station, and the three accused were held on Thursday. As of now, the matter is at an initial stage, the officer said. Medical tests of the woman are being conducted, he said. The accused will be produced before a court on Friday, he added.

NCW Writes To Kolkata Police Over Gang-Rape

The National Commission for Women wrote to the Kolkata Police chief on Friday, expressing concern over the gang-rape of a college student in the city and telling officials to conduct an immediate and time-bound probe into the matter.

The women's rights panel has taken suo motu cognisance of the South Kolkata incident.

NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, expressing deep concern and directing immediate, time-bound investigation under relevant provisions of BNS. She has also stressed the need to extend full medical, psychological, and legal assistance to the victim, along with compensation under Section 396 of BNSS, the panel said in a statement.
