TMC's Anubrata Mondal Apologises After Police Case For Threatening Bolpur Cop

Anubrata Mondal, a Trinamool Congress leader, has apologised for threatening a police officer after an audio clip of the incident went viral, prompting a police case and condemnation from his party.

Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal has issued an apology for threatening a police officer on duty. The Birbhum District Police earlier registered a case against Mondal under sections 224, 132, 75, and 351 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), following a complaint by the Inspector-in-Charge (IC) of Bolpur. The action came in the wake of an audio clip going viral.

In the audio clip, Mondal is purportedly threatening and abusing a senior police officer of the Bolpur police station. The clip was also shared by BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar.

The TMC was quick to distance itself from Mondal's alleged statements, strongly condemning the use of derogatory language against a police officer. The party instructed Mondal to tender an unconditional apology within four hours, failing which show-cause proceedings would be initiated.

Following this, the Birbhum District Police also withdrew security personnel assigned to Anubrata Mondal, which exceeded his entitlement.

According to The Indian Express, Mondal expressed regret in his apology letter, but also raised questions on the BJP and the Bolpur IC. He said, "I can apologise to Didi's police a hundred times.” He said whatever he had said at the moment was due to anger over certain allegations against the police. "But how did the BJP get a clip of the conversation between me and Bolpur IC," he asked.
