'Teach Her A Lesson': Gujarat Man Dies By Suicide After Accusing Wife Of 'Mental Torture'

The family members found a video recording on the victim's mobile phone, in which he urged them to teach his wife a lesson for causing his death, a police official said.

In yet another case of abetting suicide, a woman in Gujarat has been detained after her husband died by suicide, leaving behind a video asking his family to teach her a lesson for causing his death.

The Botad police have booked the woman, Jayaben, for allegedly abetting her husband's suicide, police said on Saturday.

The deceased, 39-year-old Suresh Sathadiya, was found hanging from the ceiling of his house at Zamrala village in Botad district on December 30.

His family members found a video recording on Sathadiya's mobile phone, in which he urged them to teach his wife a lesson for causing his death, a police official from Botad rural police station said.

Based on a complaint by Sathadiya's father, a first information report (FIR) was registered on Friday against the deceased man's wife.

The deceased father alleged that his daughter-in-law mentally harassed his son by frequently quarrelling with him and going to her parents' place every now and then.

The wife used to argue with her husband and often leave for her parent's house, the FIR stated. On the day of the incident, Sathadiya had gone to his in-laws' place to persuade his wife to return home. But when she refused, he returned home and hanged himself after recording a video. The video was found on the deceased's phone, but was not shared with anyone or shared on social media.

In the video, Suresh accused his wife of mental torture and said, "Teach her a lesson that she will remember for her entire life. She was neither mine nor her children's, she cheated me and forced me to die."

The couple reportedly married in 2008 and had four children, two daughters and two sons.

A case has been registered against the woman under section 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, and further probe was underway.

"We have detained the woman and sent the video for forensic analysis. We will present her in court and seek her remand to investigate the nature of harassment further," a senior police official told The Times of India.
