Tensions Rise In Sambhal As Protestors Pelt Stone During Jama Masjid Survey

Tensions flared in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal as protestors threw stones when a survey team arrived at Shahi Jama Masjid to conduct a survey.

Tensions arose in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal on Sunday as protestors pelted stones when a survey team reached Shahi Jama Masjid to conduct a survey of the mosque.

The survey was being done following a petition filed by senior advocate Vishnu Shanker Jain in the court of the civil judge at Sambhal claiming the mosque of being a temple.

Police used tear gas to control the situation and detained several people indulged in stone pelting.

Jain said that the survey work has been completed and the advocate commissioner will submit the report in court on November 29. Photography and videography of the site have also been done, he added.

The protestors started pelting stones at police outside the mosque while the survey team was inside the premises. The team had surveyed the mosque complex earlier on November 19.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has been keeping an eye on the developments in Sambhal. Director General Of Police Prashant Kumar and Additional Director General (Law and Order) briefed the situation in the town to the Chief Minister.

Kumar said strict action will be taken against those who take law and order into their own hands. "If needed, forces will be sent from other districts also," he added.

The DGP said that the survey was being done on the orders of the court, some miscreants pelted stones, and police and district officials were present on the spot.

Sambhal District Magistrate Rajendra Pensiya said the survey team has been safely taken out of the site. "The situation is under control, strict action will be taken against any mischievous elements and no one will be spared," he said.
