The stepwell covers an area of 400 square metres and is said to be around 150 years old. It was found during the excavation in the Laxman Ganj area in Chandausi. This excavation was being done under the supervision of executive officer of Chandausi Nagar Palika, Krishna Kumar Sonkar.
Following the reopening of the Bhasma Shankar temple in Sambhal on December 13 after 46 years, the excavation was started by the administration to discover such structures. There is no official information available on the number of days needed to complete the entire excavation of the stepwell.
Meanwhile, in another development, the Sambhal administration also commenced the renovation and excavation of the ancient Mrityu Kup at Kot Purvi on Thursday. This well is located within the Sambhal Kotwali police station area and is believed to be a sacred site that holds great religious and spiritual significance.
The excavation of this ancient site is being carried out with the cooperation of the Nagar Palika. According to locals, the well was abandoned several years ago and filled with debris, which will now be cleared. Notably, the well is located close to the Shahi Jama Masjid, where a court-ordered survey led to violent clashes between the locals and the police personnel, leaving four people dead.
