Sambhal: ASI Team Inspects Age-Old Stepwell Found In Chandausi As Excavation Work Continues

The stepwell covers an area of 400 square metres and is said to be around 150 years old. It was found during the excavation in the Laxman Ganj area in Chandausi, Sambhal.

A team from the Archaelogical Survey of India (ASI) Meerut on Saturday inspected the ancient stepwell which was discovered in the Chandausi area of Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. The exacavation work at the site has been going on for over a week now.

Earlier on December 25, an ASI team had visited the site to assess the excavation work, which is being undertaken by the Sambhal administration. The inspection was aimed at understanding the structure of the stepwell to determine the future course of action for further excavation.

Vinod Singh Rawat, Circle In-Charge, ASI Meerut, who inspected the 'baori' said: "There are several such baori in western UP...They all are the same in the structure...I met with the DM, discussions are being done..."

The stepwell covers an area of 400 square metres and is said to be around 150 years old. It was found during the excavation in the Laxman Ganj area in Chandausi. This excavation was being done under the supervision of executive officer of Chandausi Nagar Palika, Krishna Kumar Sonkar.

Following the reopening of the Bhasma Shankar temple in Sambhal on December 13 after 46 years, the excavation was started by the administration to discover such structures. There is no official information available on the number of days needed to complete the entire excavation of the stepwell.

Meanwhile, in another development, the Sambhal administration also commenced the renovation and excavation of the ancient Mrityu Kup at Kot Purvi on Thursday. This well is located within the Sambhal Kotwali police station area and is believed to be a sacred site that holds great religious and spiritual significance.

The excavation of this ancient site is being carried out with the cooperation of the Nagar Palika. According to locals, the well was abandoned several years ago and filled with debris, which will now be cleared. Notably, the well is located close to the Shahi Jama Masjid, where a court-ordered survey led to violent clashes between the locals and the police personnel, leaving four people dead.
