3 Jawans Killed As Army Vehicles Plunges Into Gorge In J&K's Ramban

Three Army personnel died after their vehicle skidded off the road and fell into a 700-feet deep gorge in Ramban district, Jammu and Kashmir.

Three Army personnel, including a junior commissioned officer (JCO), lost their lives after their vehicle skidded off the road and plunged into a 500-metre deep gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district on Sunday, according to officials.

The Army truck, which was part of a convoy moving from Jammu to Srinagar along National Highway-44, met with the accident near Battery Chashma around 11.30 am, they said, as per news agency PTI.

A joint rescue operation was immediately launched by the Army, police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local volunteers. However, all three soldiers travelling in the vehicle were found dead at the scene.

Officials identified the deceased as Naib Subedar Sujeet Kumar, driver Amit Kumar, and sepoy Man Bahadur. Their bodies were retrieved from the gorge after several hours of intense efforts. The impact of the crash had reduced the vehicle to a mangled heap of metal.

Ramban Senior Superintendent of Police Kulbir Singh confirmed the deaths and said that a preliminary investigation suggested the accident might have been caused by a technical glitch in the vehicle. A detailed inquiry is underway to ascertain the exact cause.

The Army’s Northern Command paid tribute to the fallen soldiers and expressed its condolences to the bereaved families. In a post on microblogging platform X, the Northern Command said: “An Army vehicle moving as part of routine convoy on May 4 slid off the road and fell into a gorge near Ramban. All three Army personnel travelling in the vehicle succumbed to the injuries in this tragic accident.” It further stated that the Army “stands firm with the bereaved families in this hour of grief.”
