1 Worker Dead, 3 Critical After Textile Factory Building Collapses In Punjab’s Ludhiana

A portion of a factory collapsed in Ludhiana, Punjab, trapping several workers.

A worker died, and three others were critically injured after a multi-storey building of a textile factory collapsed in the Focal Point Phase-8 area here on Saturday evening, officials said.

Rescue operations, led by two teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), along with police, fire brigade, municipal corporation, and factories department personnel, are still underway to determine if anyone remains trapped under the debris, they said, as per news agency PTI.

Jitendra Jorwal, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ludhiana, told the media, "In the Focal Point 8 area, we received information this evening that the building of a factory collapsed...Six workers are trapped. Rescue operations are underway. NDRF teams have reached the spot."

"A magisterial inquiry will be done that will submit the report," he added, as per news agency ANI. Jorwal requested people to not enter the area cordoned off for reque efforts.

According to officials cited by PTI, a total of seven workers were initially trapped when the building caved in. Six were rescued, but one was found dead, while three others remain in critical condition. One worker was rescued earlier and rushed to a nearby hospital. The deceased worker is yet to be identified.

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann On Textile Factory Building Collapse

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann took to X and posted, "News has come about the collapse of a factory building in Ludhiana. I have issued instructions to the administration to immediately assess the situation. Rescue teams have arrived and have started their work. I pray for the swift and safe rescue of the workers trapped under the debris and for their good health."

An eyewitness reported hearing a loud sound before the building collapsed.

Revenue Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian and Deputy Commissioner Jitendra Jorwal are personally supervising the rescue efforts. "The top priority is to rescue the trapped workers," they said.

Jorwal further stated that the health department has been instructed to deploy medical teams and ambulances at the site until the operation is completed. The municipal corporation and fire safety department have also been directed to station additional staff round-the-clock.
