Mumbai Reports First Suspected Death Due To Guillain-Barre Syndrome

GBS is a rare condition in which the virus attacks a person's immune, resulting in muscle weakness, loss of sensation in legs and/or arms, as well as problems swallowing or breathing.

In the first suspected death due to Guillain-Barre Syndrome in Mumbai, a 53-year-old man, who worked as a ward boy at BMC’s B.N. Desai Hospital passed away on Wednesday. The patient was on a ventilator at Mumbai’s Nair Hospital.

GBS is a rare condition in which the virus attacks a person's immune system and peripheral nerves, resulting in muscle weakness, loss of sensation in the legs and/or arms, as well as problems swallowing or breathing. 

According to Dr. Shailesh Mohite, Dean of Nair Hospital, the patient had been ill for several days and was undergoing treatment for a long time.  

A 16-year-old girl diagnosed with the GBS virus is also admitted to the same hospital. She is a resident of Palghar and a 10th-grade student.  

5 More Suspected GBS Cases In Pune, Tally Rises To 197

The tally of suspected and confirmed Guillain-Barre Syndrome cases in Pune reached 197 after five more patients were detected with the rare nerve disorder, news agency PTI reported citing health department officials.

An official from the health department said on Tuesday that the five patients comprised two fresh cases and three from previous days.

"Of the 197 cases, 172 have been diagnosed with GBS. At least 40 patients are from Pune Municipal Corporation areas, 92 from newly added villages in the PMC, 29 from the Pimpri Chinchwad civic limits, 28 from Pune Rural and eight from other districts," a health department release said.

The health department further said that while 104 patients have been discharged, as many as 50 others are in ICU and 20 on ventilator support. "The number of deaths suspected to have been caused by GBS in the region stood unchanged at seven," it added.

The latest deatg in Pune due to GBS was of a 37-year-old driver, who died at a hospital in the city on February 11. This took the toll of suspected and confirmed deaths linked to the nerve disorder to seven. 

A Pune civic health official said on Monday that the he was initially brought to a city-based hospital following complaints of weakness in the lower limbs. He later suffered supra-ventricular tachycardia, a heart rhythm disorder during treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the Pune Municipal Corporation-run Kamala Nehru Hospital, PTI reported.
