Mumbai Rain: FIR Against BMC After Woman Drowns In Andheri Drain Amid Heavy Rain

Mumbai police have filed a case against BMC and a contractor after a woman drowned in an open drain during heavy rain.

The Mumbai police have registered a case against Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and a contractor over the death of a 45-year-old woman who drowned amid heavy rain in the city on Wednesday.

The BMC has also ordered a probe into the incident that took place in suburban Andheri.

A police complaint was filed by the victim's husband saying the victim, Vimal Anil Gaikwad, was the breadwinner of the family.  "I am a sick man, my wife used to take care of my house. We have lost everything, I want that whoever is at fault should be punished. We have lodged an FIR," he said, reported NDTV.

Facing charges of negligence, the BMC has said it has formed a three-member panel led by the Deputy Commissioner and sought a report on the incident within three days.

"A high-level inquiry committee consisting of three members has been formed. Deputy Commissioner of Zone 3, Devidas Kshirsagar, will chair the committee, while Chief Fire Officer Ravindra Ambulgekar and Chief Engineer (Quality) Avinash Tambe will be the other two members," said the civic body in a press release.

Gaikwad had fallen into an overflowing manhole during the rain rampage near gate no. 8 of the MIDC building in Andheri East. She was taken to Cooper Hospital by the police and fire brigade where she was declared brought dead by the doctors.

Incessant rain in Mumbai on Wednesday and Thursday threw life out of gear with waterlogged roads, inundated low-lying areas, and disrupted local train schedules. As many as 14 flights arriving at Mumbai Airport were diverted to different cities including Hyderabad, Udaipur, and Goa.

A holiday was declared in schools and colleges across the city on Thursday in view of the inclement weather conditions.
