Mumbai On High Alert After Agencies Warn Of Possible 'Terror Attack'

Security was heightened across Mumbai following warnings from central agencies about a possible terror threat.

Mumbai on high alert: Mumbai Police ramped up security in most crowded areas, especially at places of worship that witness high footfalls, after the Intelligence Bureau (IB) issued an alert about potential terror activity in the city.

"We have been instructed to conduct mock drills in crowded areas and religious places. All deputy commissioners of police are actively monitoring the security in their respective jurisdictions," Times of India quoted a senior police officer asABP nAB saying.

Police personnel are reportedly also conducting "mock drills" at religious and crowded places. As per a report by NDTV, the DCPs (Deputy Commissioner Of Police) of the city have also been asked to pay special attention to security arrangements in their respective zones.

On Friday, police conducted a security drill at the bustling Crawford Market area. When inquired about the heavy police present in the area, the officials reported said it was in view of the upcoming festivals and assembly elections. As per the TOI report, in Chembur, a senior police officer inspected a temple's security arrangements, while in Matunga, a temple was closed for devotees following a police inspection in the morning.

Mumbai, where the 10-day "Ganesh Chaturthi" celebration recently concluded earlier this month, is now preparing for Durga Puja, Dussehra and Diwali. Legislative polls for the 288-member Maharashtra state assembly are also likely to be held in November.
