When Will Monsoon Arrive In Mumbai? A Look At Past Trends

The early arrival of monsoon in Kerala does not mean it will cover other parts of the country accordingly, an IMD official said.

Mumbai Monsoon Date: Monsoon arrived in Kerala on Saturday, marking its earliest arrival over the Indian mainland since 2009. Normally, the southwest monsoon makes its onset over Kerala by June 1 and covers the entire country by July 8.

However, the early arrival of monsoon in Kerala does not mean it will cover other parts of the country accordingly, an IMD official said. The monsoon arrival dates are characterised by large-scale variabilities and global, regional and local features.

Mumbai IMD Director Shubhangi Bhute said the conditions for monsoon arrival are now favourable in Maharashtra. During the next 24 hours, heavy rains will continue in Konkan and western Maharashtra, along with several other districts in the state.

"The conditions for the arrival of the monsoon are now favourable in Maharashtra, and the onset is expected to happen in the next two to three days. Low pressure over the Arabian Sea has turned into a depression and is expected to enter Ratnagiri district, so a red alert has been issued over there, along with Satara and Kolhapur. Besides rainfall, there is a possibility of gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kmph," the official said.

A yellow alert has been issued for Mumbai and Thane till May 28 (Wednesday). The alert indicates moderate to heavy spells of rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds. A red alert has been issued for Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts in Konkan for the next 24 hours, indicating a very heavy rainfall.

A red alert has been sounded for the next 24 hours for the ghats of Satara and Kolhapur, followed by an orange alert till May 27.
