‘No Dog Meat In Momo’: Mohali Authorities Urge Against Rumours After Recovery Of ‘Severed Pug Head At Factory’

The Deputy Commissioner rubbished the claims of dog meat being in a Mohali momo and spring roll factory. After reports claimed that a severed head of a dog was found in the factory refrigerator.

After reports of a severed head of a dog found in the refrigerator at a momo and spring roll factory in Mohali, Punjab, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Komal Mittal clarified that claims of dog meat being used in the factory are false and misleading.

According to The Indian Express, Mittal said that the health department “ruled out the recovered meat sample to be of a dog” and that the animal husbandry experts were conducting further examination of the sample to identify whose meat it was, the DC also urged people not to spread rumours.

Health officials launched an investigation into the factory after a video surfaced showing the unit operating in highly unhygienic conditions, as per a Hindustan Times (HT) report. On Sunday, the DC stated that Food Safety, Health, and Municipal Corporation teams conducted raids in the Matour area, collecting multiple food samples, including vegetables and other items, for examination.

According to Hindustan Times, the factory supplied over a quintal of momo and spring rolls every day across Chandigarh, Panchkula and Kalka for the past two years.

Meanwhile, Mittal also directed the health, food safety, and Municipal Corporation teams to inspect street food vendors in Mohali, ensuring proper hygiene and food safety compliance. Municipal Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh was directed to regulate unauthorised food carts and take strict action against illegal slaughtering.

The Mohali Municipal Corporation imposed a Rs 12,000 fine on the factory owner for illegal slaughtering and an additional Rs 10,000 fine for possessing a bulk of plastic bags, as per HT.

Taking note of the unhygienic food preparation, Mittal warned that strict action against anyone endangering public health through unsafe practices. As per the report, SSP Deepak Pareek stated that an FIR was filed under sections 272 (malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) and 274 (adulteration of food or drink intended for sale) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for gross negligence.
