14 Killed, 6 Critical After Consuming Spurious Liquor In Amritsar's Majitha

Amritsar Police said a case has been registered at the Majitha police station and further investigation is underway.

At least 14 people were killed allegedly after consuming spurious liquor in five villages of Amritsar, Punjab. Six others were critical and admitted to a hospital, officials said. 

The incident took place in Majitha area on the night of Monday, May 12. A preliminary probe has revealed that the liquor was purchased from the same location on the evening of Sunday, May 11. Some of the victims died early Monday morning, but the police were not immediately informed.

The police got to know about the incident around 9.30 pm on Monday, following which it swung into action and rounded up four people.

Senior Superintendent of Police Maninder Singh said the main supplier, Parabjeet Singh, has been arrested. The police interrogated him and found out about the kingpin, Sahab Singh.

"We have rounded him up as well. We have been given strict instructions from the Punjab government that strict action must be taken against suppliers of spurious liquor," the SSP said.

Two FIRs have been registered under stringent sessions, and the police are going door to door to find out more people who have consumed the liquor to avoid further casualties.
