8 People Die After Inhaling Toxic Gas While Cleaning Well In Madhya Pradesh

The incident occurred in the Chaigaon Makhan area, where the victims went inside the well to clean the water body before immersing idols for the preparation of 'Gangour' festival.

Eight individuals lost their lives after consuming suspected poisonous gas inside a well in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh on Thursday. Police stated that they went inside the well to clean, but they got trapped.

Khandwa collector Rishav Gupta and SP Manoj Kumar Rai said the incident occurred in the Chaigaon Makhan area, where the victims went inside the well to clean the water body before immersing idols for the preparation of 'Gangour' festival.

"All eight died possibly due to the inhalation of a poisonous gas emanating from the well, and their bodies were later retrieved," officials said, India Today reported.

Reports confirmed that a labourer who had first gone into the well to prepare the well lost consciousness, likely due to the toxic fumes. Later, all seven people followed in an attempt to rescue him, but no one survived.

The bodies of all 8 deceased have been recovered, and the dead were identified as Rakesh Patel (23), Anil Patel (25), Ajay Patel (24), Sharan Patel (35), Vasudev Patel (40), Gajanan Patel (35), Arjun Patel (35), and Mohan Patel (53).

In a similar incident, four individuals lost their lives on Friday (August 2, 2024) after reportedly inhaling toxic gas inside a dry well in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhattarpur district, an official confirmed. The incident occurred in the morning in Kurraha village, located about 23 kilometers from the district headquarters.

“The hammer of a mason, Munna Kushwaha, fell into the well. One Sheikh Aslam entered the well to retrieve the hammer but did not come out for long. His father Bashir then got in to find out what was taking Sheikh so long. He was followed by Kushwaha and Aslam’s son Altaf,” the official said, PTI reported.

After being alerted by villagers, local authorities retrieved the four and rushed them to the district hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead on arrival.
