Lucknow Building Collapse: Death Toll Climbs To 8 As Three More Bodies Recovered, Several Still Feared Trapped

At least eight people died and over 25 others were injured after a building collapsed in Lucknow's Transport Nagar area on Saturday evening.

Lucknow Building Collapse: The death toll in the building collapse In Lucknow climbed to eight after rescuers pulled out three more bodies from the debris, officials said on Sunday. At least 28 others were also injured after a three-storey building housing godowns and a motor workshop collapsed in the Transport Nagar area in Uttar Pradesh's capital city on Saturday evening.

Teams of the fire department, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are at the spot, carrying out relief and rescue operations, with the administration focusing on ensuring that no one else is trapped under the rubble. Senior police and administrative officials are also on the accident site to oversee the rescue operations.

The injured have been, meanwhile, admitted to various hospitals in the district, including Lok Bandhu Hospital, according to the information provided by the office of the Uttar Pradesh Relief Commissioner. 

According to police, it was a fairly new building, constructed around four years ago. It housed a motor workshop and warehouse on the ground floor, a medical godown on the first floor and a cutlery warehouse on the second floor. Some construction work was still underway at the time of the incident, with most victims working on the ground floor when the structure fell at 4:45 pm on Saturday.

Quoting a survivor Akash Singh, who worked in the medical godown and was among the injured, the news agency PTI reported that a pillar of the building had developed a crack. "We had come down to the ground floor because it was raining. We noticed that a pillar of the building had developed a crack. Suddenly, the entire building collapsed on us," he said. 

Condolences Pour In

Defence Minister and Lucknow MP Rajnath Singh spoke to the district magistrate regarding the incident and took stock of the relief work and the treatment of the injured. "My deepest condolences to the bereaved families of those who lost their loved ones in this accident. Along with this, I wish for the speedy recovery of all the injured," he posted on X.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has also taken note of the situation and is monitoring the rescue efforts closely. He has also issued directions to ensure free treatment of the injured.
