Gujarat Couple Elopes After Murdering Stranger To Fake Suicide, Arrested After 3 Months

Kutch West Superintendent of Police, Vikas Sunda, confirmed that the couple had been taken into custody and charged with murder and conspiracy.

A 27-year-old married woman and her lover were arrested for allegedly murdering an elderly man to stage her suicide in the Kutch district of Gujarat, officials said on Sunday. The couple, identified as Rami Kesariya and Anil Gangal, reportedly killed the man—whom they didn’t know—and burned his body to elope together.

Police said Rami and Anil lured the elderly man, killed him, and then set his body on fire to make it appear as though Rami had committed suicide. They left her clothes, phone, and shoes near the burning body to deceive her family into believing she had died by suicide.

"This act was intended to mislead family members and facilitate their escape, allowing the couple to live freely together," India Today quoted police as saying.

The couple carried out their plan and fled the area immediately after the incident, which occurred on July 3. Anil came back the next day to see how things were going at Rami's house. He experienced that the family of Rami had accepted the burned body as hers after her clothes and mobile phone were found at the spot.

Couple Confesses Crime To Father

After two months in hiding, they returned to Kutch and rented a room, but eventually realised their plan had failed. On September 27, they confessed the crime to Rami’s father, seeking forgiveness. However, the father of Rami refused to forgive them and informed the police with complete details of the incident.

After receiving the father's report, the police initiated an investigation into the matter and arrested Rami and Anil. They also started efforts to identify the murdered man using a sketch. During questioning, both Anil and Rami admitted to committing the crime.

Kutch West Superintendent of Police, Vikas Sunda, confirmed that the couple had been taken into custody and charged with murder and conspiracy.

"We suspected foul play from the beginning and initiated a thorough investigation, which ultimately led to the arrest of the lovers," Sunda said. Further inquiries into the case are ongoing.
