The West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to stage a 'Swasthya Bhavan Gherao' programme on Thursday to protest against the death of the junior doctor at the state-run R.G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata earlier this month. The leadership of the West Bengal unit of BJP is determined to make the protest on Thursday a success and Bengal BJP President and Union Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar is supervising the arrangements on the the ground level to make that happen.

“We are using all the possible resources to strengthen the movement on this issue,” Majumdar said on Wednesday. Quoting sources, news agency IANS reported that the central leadership of the BJP has also directed the state unit to go all out in steering the movement against the rape and murder of the junior doctor, considering that the state government and the ruling Trinamool Congress are already on the backfoot on this issue. Other than the 'Swastha Bhavan Gherao' programme, the BJP will continue with its five-day demonstration on the Shyambazar five-point crossing, which is close to the R.G. Kar Medical College, that started on Wednesday. After obtaining permission from the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, the BJP on Wednesday launched its five-day demonstration in Shyambazar.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court is set to resume hearing pleas in connection with the rape and murder of the junior doctor at 10:30 am on Thursday, August 22. The Central Bureau of Investigation will also submit its status report on the case.

RG Kar Rape And Murder Case: Protests Singe Kolkata Streets, CBI Continues Quizzing Ex-Principal

Meanwhile, protestors from across walks of life, who joined in solidarity with the ongoing junior doctors’ agitation against the alleged rape and murder of the medic, took to the streets of Kolkata on Wednesday, even as public healthcare in West Bengal continued to remain sorely affected. Although no fresh arrests were reported in the case, The CBI, meanwhile, grilled former RG Kar hospital principal Sandip Ghosh for the sixth consecutive day. The agency sleuths also summoned various other top authorities of the hospital, including its current superintendent and vice-principal Bulbul Mukhopadhyay and her predecessor Sanjay Vasishth, for questioning. Mukhopadhyay previously served as the dean of student affairs.

Quoting sources, news agency PTI reported that a day before the agency was supposed to submit its investigation progress report to the Supreme Court on Thursday, investigators were trying to crosscheck a bunch of “inconsistencies” found in Ghosh’s statements.

A former administrator of the hospital, meanwhile, moved the state’s top judiciary seeking an ED probe into the former hospital principal’s alleged financial irregularities. Bowing to the demand of the agitating junior doctors, the West Bengal government removed senior officials from the RG Kar hospital, according to state health secretary NS Nigam.
