Kolkata Law Student Gang-Raped In College, BJP Says 'RG Kar Memory Hasn't Faded Yet And...'

A law student was gang-raped in Kolkata. The incident occurred on Thursday evening. Three suspects have been arrested so far. The BJP has slammed the Mamata Banerjee government over the incident.

A law student was gang-raped at a law college in Kasba, a suburb of Kolkata, on June 25. The alleged perpetrators of the crime were a former student and two college staff members.

BJP leader Amit Malviya said that certain reports claimed the involvement of a TMC member. "The horror of RG Kar hasn't faded, and yet such heinous crimes continue to rise daily in Bengal. Under Mamata Banerjee's rule, West Bengal has become a nightmare for women. Rape has turned into a routine tragedy. The BJP stands with the victim and her family. We are determined to end this culture of impunity. We will not rest until every culprit is punished," he said.

The police said three people have been arrested in the case so far. "The incident took place inside the college on June 25 between 7:30 PM and 10:50 PM. A preliminary medical examination of the victim was conducted at CNMC, Kolkata. The witnesses were examined and their statements were recorded. The mobile phones of the three accused were seized. The accused shall be produced before the Alipore court for remand," a police statement read.

Kolkata Police chief prosecutor Sourin Ghosal later said: “All three accused were produced before the in-charge Chief Judicial Magistrate, Alipore, where police cited corroboration between medical evidence and the victim’s statement. The court has granted police custody till July 1, 2025."

2024 RG Kar Rape Case

On August 9, 2024, a 31‑year‑old postgraduate trainee doctor was found raped and murdered in a seminar room at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, triggering widespread outrage and demands for justice. A civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, Sanjay Roy, was arrested the next day.

Initial criticism of the Kolkata Police's handling of the case, including the alleged vandalism of the crime scene during protests, led the Calcutta High Court to transfer the investigation to the CBI on August 13. In January 2025, a Sealdah court convicted Roy of rape and murder, sentencing him to life imprisonment without parole, along with a ₹50,000 fine and ₹17 lakh in compensation to the victim's family.

While the CBI told the Calcutta High Court that forensic evidence did not indicate gang-rape, the bench raised questions over alleged discrepancies between the inquest and autopsy reports.
