Kolkata Rape Prime Accused Monojit Mishra Is A 'History-Sheeter,' Was Booked For Theft, Assault, Harassment
The 31-year-old key accused, Monojit Mishra, has a documented history of criminal charges, including harassment, assault, theft, and damaging property.

A 24-year-old first-year student at South Calcutta Law College was allegedly gang-raped inside the college premises on June 25, 2025. As a Special Investigation Team (SIT) by Kolkata Police is carrying out the investigation in the case, the past record of the main accused has come to the fore, revealing that he has been chargesheeted in several cases earlier.
The 31-year-old key accused, Monojit Mishra, is a practicing criminal lawyer and former student of the law college, where the incident allegedly took place. He has a documented history of criminal charges, including harassment, assault, theft, and damaging property, a news report by Telegraph India said, citing police sources.
“Monojit Mishra is a history-sheeter with several cases and chargesheets against him in the Kolkata Police jurisdiction,” said a senior officer.
Criminal Background Of The Main Accused
Monojit Mishra, a former Trinamool Chhatra Parishad leader, has been previously chargesheeted in several cases under Kolkata Police jurisdiction. His criminal record includes incidents of harassing women, assault, property damage, and theft. Multiple cases have been filed against him at Kalighat, Kasba, Alipore, Haridevpur, and Tollygunge police stations, Telegraph India reported.
He graduated from the South Calcutta Law College four years ago, and had been working there as a casual employee since 2024.
Police records indicate that he was arrested in 2017 for assault and violence in Kalighat area. In July 2019, Mishra was accused of tearing a woman’s clothes inside the law college and a chargesheet was filed in the case.
Later that year, he was implicated in a theft case involving personal belongings from a friend’s apartment. He was accused of stealing a music system, gold chain, pair of spectacles, and a perfume from a friend's apartment on New Year's Eve. The case was registered in the first week of January 2020, and later a chargesheet was also filed.
In March 2022, he was chargesheeted for allegedly molesting a woman in Kasba. The college authorities also filed a complaint against him in May 2024 for assaulting a security guard and damaging property.
Several people at the college have alleged that Mishra had threatened students who participated in the "Reclaim the Night" movement last year following the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case, the report said.
Mishra was allegedly employed at the law college as a casual staff member on the recommendation of TMC MLA from Budge Budge and president of the college's governing body, Kumar Deb, vice-principal Nayna Chatterji said on Friday. However, Deb denied recommending Mishra.
CCTV Footage Corroborates Survivor's Account
According to police, the assault took place in the college guard’s room, where the victim was forcibly taken by Mishra and two senior students. A security guard, who was present during the incident, has also been arrested for failing to intervene and for inconsistencies in his statements.
CCTV footage recovered from the college corroborates the survivor's account, showing her being dragged into the guard’s room and the movements of all accused individuals. Forensic teams have collected evidence from multiple locations on campus, including hair strands, bottles, and a hockey stick allegedly used to threaten the victim.
Medical examination of the survivor confirmed signs of forceful penetration, bite marks, and nail scratches, supporting the allegations of sexual assault. The police suspect the crime may have been triggered after the victim rejected a marriage proposal from Mishra.
