While many echoed Kiran Mazumdar's sentiments, pointing to the state of Bengaluru’s roads, others countered that India has cities like Mysuru and Indore have maintained cleanliness standards.

Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar Shaw has sparked a debate over Bengaluru’s civic condition by drawing a comparison between the city's streets and those in Ecuador. Sharing an image of the pristine streets of San Cristobal Island, she remarked, "Bengaluru, hang your head in shame," underscoring the persistent issues of waste management, poor infrastructure and road maintenance plaguing India's tech capital.
Her comments quickly gained traction on social media, prompting a flurry of reactions. While many echoed her sentiments, pointing to the deteriorating state of Bengaluru’s roads and garbage disposal, others countered that India has cities like Mysuru and Indore, which have successfully maintained cleanliness standards.
Shaw responded to one such suggestion, stating, "Yes, but the point is that even Ecuador, a developing country, is well maintained by its local municipality." This statement further fueled the conversation, with social media users lamenting the state of governance in Bengaluru.

Social Media Reacts
Criticism poured in from frustrated citizens, with one user remarking, "BBMP has mistakenly taken the target to make Bengaluru a Garbage City. Everywhere you turn, you will see garbage dumped." Others pointed out the lack of civic discipline among both officials and residents, with one post stating, "Overall ecosystem is crippled. RIght from the municipality to the people - basic civic etiquette is missing and there is no filling that empty bucket."
Another user highlighted the contrast between Bengaluru and other global cities, saying, "Bengaluru is beyond redemption. The argument that Bengaluru is overcrowded, then please look at Tokyo, much bigger, much denser but clean and organized. Govt intention to fix =0, officials intention to make money= 100%."
A X user said, "Just visit Mysore, Indore. Surat, Rajkot to make the point ! Ecuador is too far."
Concerns over deteriorating road conditions were also raised with a particular mention of Bommasandra-Jigani Link Road, a major SEZ hub known for its hazardous roads and frequent accidents.
